So That Others May Live

for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” (Luke 19:10, New King James Version)

For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:6-8, New King James Version)

I came across the tail end a movie a few weeks ago that I had not seen before; called "The Guardian". It is a story based on the search and rescue swimmers of the United States Coast Guard. The SAR swimmers motto is "So Others May Live”. These heroic men and women jump from helicopters into the raging sea swimming to the rescue of those in trouble. Near the end of movie the older swimmer was talking with his younger protege. The younger man was asking him how many people he had saved; in hopes of one day exceeding his teacher’s stats. The older man looked at him and said quietly twenty-two is the only number I keep track of, the only faces that haunt me, are of those I could not save.

That line struck a chord with me; I began to think about the people I know. I began to think about those I am around that do not know Jesus as their Savior. I began to think about Jesus and how He came to earth, lived a sinless perfect life and how he died on the cross and rose on the third day to be the propitiation for my sin. He loved the world so much that he took the punishment of sin and the wrath of God the Father upon himself, so that I could be saved. He plunged into the abyss of the sin of this world on a rescue mission to seek and save those who were lost. I think about those I need to tell about Jesus and of his saving grace; I wonder why I hesitate to share.
“What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’ I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance. (Luke 15:4-7, New King James Version)

Oh, how heaven rejoices when one sinner repents.  Still I wonder, how sad Jesus must be when one of his children is lost to him forever. I believe the saddest words that will ever be spoken by Jesus at the judgement are "depart from me... I never knew you." Time is running out, the signs of the times are everywhere. Some wonder why Jesus has not come back yet, but I can almost Jesus saying, "Let us give them a little more time, I can save that soul, if I give him just a little more time ."  However, one day time will run out and judgement will come. We need to share the Gospel with everyone we can while we still have time.

You may be saying to yourself, "how can I share my faith. I am afraid because I don't know the words to say:. I understand the fear in not knowing what you should say when you are new at sharing your faith. To alleviate some of the fear, here is a simple outline you can use for sharing your  F.A.I.T.H. © 1998 LifeWay Press

In your personal opinion, what do you understand it takes for a person to go to heaven?

(wait for their answer)

I’d like to share with you how the Bible answers this question, if it is all right. There is a word that can be used to answer this question: FAITH (spell out on fingers).

F is for FORGIVENESS.

We cannot have eternal life and heaven without God’s forgiveness.

“In Him [meaning Jesus] we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins” --Ephesians 1:7a, NKJV.

A is for AVAILABLE

Forgiveness is available. It is --

AVAILABLE FOR ALL

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” --John 3:16, NKJV.

BUT NOT AUTOMATIC

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven” --  Matthew 7:21a, NKJV.

I is for IMPOSSIBLE

It is impossible for God to allow sin into heaven.

GOD IS ---

〈 LOVE

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” --John 3:16, NKJV.

〈 JUST

“For judgment is without mercy” --James 2:13a, NKJV.

〈 MAN IS SINFUL

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” --Romans 3:23, NKJV.

Question: But how can a sinful person enter heaven, where God allows no sin?

T is for TURN

Question: If you were driving down the road and someone asked you to turn, what would he or she be asking you to do? (change direction)

Turn means repent.

TURN from something--sin and self

“But unless you repent you will all likewise perish” --Luke 13:3b, NKJV.

TURN to someone; trust Christ only

(The Bible tells us that) “Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that  He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures” --1 Corinthians 15:3b-4, NKJV.

“If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” --Romans 10:9, NKJV.

H is for HEAVEN

Heaven is eternal life.

HERE

“I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly” -- John 10:10b, NKJV.

HEREAFTER

“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also” --John 14:3, NKJV.

HOW

How can a person have God’s forgiveness, heaven and eternal life, and Jesus as personal Savior and Lord? By FAITH, you can think of faith this way.

Forsaking All I Trust Him.

that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. (Romans 10:9, New King James Version)

Do you understand what has been presented to you? Would you like to accept this forgiveness by trusting Jesus Christ as your personal Savior and Lord?

Let us pray:

Lord Jesus, I confess to you that I am a sinner. Right now as best I know how, I repent of my sins and ask for you to forgive me. I accept the forgiveness you freely offer and ask that you be Lord and Savior of my life. Lord I turn from my sin, to you by faith alone. Thank you for saving me, help me to live my life for you. In Jesus name, amen.
